Well, it looks like the record for the number of passengers that can fly on a commercial airplane is about to be broken.

Air Austral – which operates between Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean and Paris – has now confirmed it has ordered two A380s in a single economy class configuration that will seat 840 people.

That is quite a large number. Air Austral President Gerard Etheve claiming the new planes will have “the lowest fuel cost and emissions per passenger of any aircraft available today”.

The provisional order for two of the European planes worth some $695 million was expected to be firmed up at the Dubai Airshow.

The 200 aircraft sold so far have all been ordered in their standard configuration of 525 seats and airlines have in practice opted for fewer seats by making more room for premium passengers.
